Should Ripple's XRP Be On Crypto Investors' Radars?

Could you get rich by betting big on XRP?

Author: Lee Trett

Conflating Ripple’s corporate enterprise success with the price appreciation of the XRP token remains one of the most persistent traps in crypto investing. While Ripple continues to integrate its payment network across legacy financial institutions, the underlying economics of XRP tell a far more nuanced story for prospective investors.

The Enterprise vs. The Token Mechanics

The primary bull thesis for XRP has long rested on institutional adoption: as banks use Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) network for cross-border settlement, demand for the native asset should surge. However, the operational reality of ODL is largely demand-neutral.

When a payment settles via ODL, dollars or euros are converted into XRP and then back into the destination currency almost instantaneously. Because buying and selling occur nearly simultaneously in equal size, these institutional payment flows create virtually zero net buying pressure on the open market.

The Stablecoin Pivot: RLUSD

The introduction of Ripple USD (RLUSD) - Ripple's regulated, dollar-backed stablecoin - further separates corporate growth from XRP token demand.

Financial institutions operating under strict compliance frameworks naturally prefer price stability over volatile crypto assets. RLUSD provides identical cross-border settlement speed without exposing balance sheets to overnight market swings. As Ripple places RLUSD at the center of its institutional settlement strategy, the stablecoin is capturing transaction volume that speculative investors assumed would belong exclusively to XRP.

Supply Dynamics and Escrow Dilution

Beyond utility mechanics, XRP faces structural headwinds on its supply side:

  • Escrow Releases: Programmed monthly releases from Ripple's escrow accounts inject hundreds of millions of tokens into circulation, creating consistent sell-side pressure.

  • Market Cap Expansion: With tens of billions of tokens still scheduled to enter circulation over time, reaching historical price peaks requires a significantly larger total market capitalization today than it did in previous market cycles.

The Investor Verdict

XRP is not entirely without speculative catalysts - spot ETF access and broader market rallies can trigger sharp cyclical price swings. However, treating XRP as a direct proxy for Ripple's enterprise expansion is an expensive misunderstanding of market structure. Unless utility shifts back toward mandatory token consumption or supply dynamics tighten significantly, XRP remains a speculative trading asset rather than a core institutional holding.
